Australia's draw with Japan has has allowed Saudi Arabia to assume top spot in Group B of Asian qualifying for the 2018 World Cup following their 3-0 home victory over the United Arab Emirates.
Australia's 1-1 stalemate with Japan in Melbourne on Tuesday night has resulted in them dropping to second in their group with eight points after four matches, the Saudis now leading the charge on 10 points.
The Green Falcons, who settled for a 2-2 home draw with the Socceroos last week, were dominant at Jeddah's King Abdullah Sports City against the UAE.
They kept their undefeated record alive thanks to three second-half goals on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning AEDT).
The Socceroos sit one point in front of Japan ahead of next month's trip to last-placed Thailand before their five remaining qualifiers in 2017, with the top two qualifiers in the group securing a ticket to the World Cup.
Iran sits first in Group A on 10 points after a 1-0 win over South Korea, with Uzbekistan trailing by a point after a 2-0 win over China.
