Boston Red Sox baseballer Jacoby Ellsbury had a scare when a plane he was travelling on was struck by lightning mid-flight.

Ellsbury, a centre fielder who debuted with the Red Sox back in 2007, tweeted about the incident after landing.

"Our plane just got struck by lightning heading to Ft. Myers! #itsgoodluck", he posted on Twitter.

The Red Sox haven't been short of drama over the off-season - minor leaguer Bryce Brentz also shot himself in the leg in a horror accident while cleaning his gun.
