Ex-Liverpool player Miki Roque passed away on Sunday after a lengthy cancer fight. He was 23.

Roque was diagnosed with cancer in March last year and had surgery performed to take out a tumour lodged in his pelvis.

Roque's club Real Betis said the following in a statement: "The Real Betis player Miquel Roque Farrero, Miki Roque, has died today at the Instituto Dexeus de Barcelona hospital at the age of 23."

"Real Betis send their deepest condolences to the Roque family."

Roque, who was contracted with the Reds from 2005 to 2009, played in the English giant's triumphant FA Youth Cup side in 2005-06.

He was introduced off the bench in his lone top-grade match with Liverpool in a UEFA Champions League game in 2006-07.

A statement from Anfield said: "Liverpool Football Club was today saddened to hear news that former player Miki Roque has lost his battle with cancer aged 23.

"Everyone at Liverpool Football Club would like to send their thoughts to Miki's family at this sad time."
