Ante Covic in talks about return to Jets

More Football News

Ante Covic is in talks to return to his first A-League club Newcastle as a replacement for injured first-choice goalkeeper Ben Kennedy.

The Jets are in need of an experienced gloveman to fill the void left by Kennedy, who is sidelined indefinitely after rupturing his achilles tendon at training.

Covic, who steered the Hunter-based club to its one and only championship eight years ago and was a key figure in Western Sydney's 2014 Asian Champions League title, is a free agent after Perth chose not to re-sign him at the end of last season.

With 184 A-League appearances for the Jets, Melbourne Victory, the Wanderers and Glory, the 41-year-old would bring valuable experience to coach Mark Jones' set-up.

No decisions have been made but Covic is understood to have spoken to Jets officials about a potential move.

"It's about trying to find what's the best option for us," Jones said.

"We do need a quality second or first keeper.

"He would be a good option, but it's a long way from being done.

"We have to go through our options and talk to everyone and see who we can get on board."

Second-choice keeper Jack Duncan started against Adelaide in Sunday's season-opening 1-1 draw.
